HOW TO IDENTIFY WHETHER A TOOL IS GENUINELY AI AND NOT JUST HYPE

with Ei kommentteja

Artificial intelligence has come to change reality as we have known it until now.

One key step in entering the world of AI is knowing how to identify fake AI and hype before someone tries to sell it to you (and they will try). Every day, ”magic solutions” emerge that promise to automate everything effortlessly, ”smart bots” that in reality merely repeat pre-programmed responses, or ”experts” who talk about AI without knowing how it works.

In this guide, I shall give you five key signs to help you recognise when a tool, project, or solution being sold to you is not genuinely AI.

1. Empty and Miraculous Promises

”Earn money automatically with AI that works independently.” ”Our system learns everything you do without any human intervention.” ”With our AI, you will never need to think again.” Why be suspicious: Well-applied AI requires data, planning, and oversight. If it seems like magic, it probably is not AI… or it is not your friend.

2. Plenty of Marketing, but No AI in Sight

Many companies claim to have added AI to their tools… but if you cannot notice it, it is as good as non-existent. How to tell if you are not a technical expert:

Does the system change its behaviour based on what you do… or does it always work in the same way? Does it offer ”generated” results, or does it merely follow automated steps? Are you given examples of how it improves over time or how it personalises responses? If you notice no difference with or without AI, the AI is most likely included solely for sales purposes.

3. Always Responds in the Same Way and Does Not Adapt to You

An AI-powered tool should behave differently depending on the user, context, or situation. If you always receive the same response and it does not adapt in any way, there is most likely no AI involved… just automation.

How to test it easily: Try changing the way you ask a question or input different data. Does the tool change its response, or does it do the same thing? Does it respond with logic, or does it merely follow a pre-determined script? Does it feel as though it ”understands” your needs, or does it only give generic messages? If there is no personalisation or dynamic response, there is most likely no AI behind it — just fixed rules.

4. Exaggerated or Impossible Use Cases

When AI promises results without data, context, or margin of error… it is hype. Suspicious examples:

”Predicts the future of your business with a single click.” ”Identifies deep emotions without audio or video.” ”Optimises your entire marketing automatically without any configuration.” Important note: AI operates on probabilities, not certainties. If the promises sound infallible, they are most likely false.

5. No Trace of a Technical Team

If you see only the names of marketers, influencers, or coaches… but no technical experts, be suspicious. Who developed the solution? Are there data scientists, engineers, or AI specialists behind it? Do they have LinkedIn profiles, GitHub accounts, previous projects, or publications? If the team cannot be traced, there is most likely no real AI behind it.

Final Checklist

If, after the five signs above, you still have doubts about a proposal that claims to leverage AI, answer these questions:

Is it clearly explained what the AI does? Is it stated which model or tool is used? Can I try it or see a real demo? Does the output improve over time? Are there verifiable success stories? If you get more than three ”no” answers… look for a better alternative.

I hope this guide helps you understand that AI cannot be mastered unless you have the right tools at your disposal.
